We are building a relationship with Whaea Alice (Whaea Taylor's Mum) who is a master weaver. Whaea Alice is the kaitiaki of the Pā Harakeke we are establishing at our kura. A Pā Harakeke is a place that has lots of harakeke (flax bushes) that weavers come to harvest and collect harakeke. Our harakeke at kura needs a lot of work and attention to ensure it is sustainable. Whaea Alice is going to work with our tamariki to teach them how to look after our harakeke. We also went to Manaaki Whenua (Landcare Research) to learning about all the different types of harakeke (there are 50+!) They gifted us 5 different types to plant at Te Ara Koropiko!
